Identification
- Ghost ants are about 2 mm long
- They have a pale, almost translucent abdomen
- When crushed, they smell like rotten coconuts
Behavior
- Ghost ants nest close to other ants’ nests
- They steal food and brood (larvae and pupae) from other ants’ nests
- They are attracted to food crumbs and spills

Control
- To get rid of ghost ants, you can use baits
- You can use slow-acting baits that are sugar-based or protein/grease-based
- You can sponge the ants with soapy water
- You can plug up entryways with petroleum jelly or caulk
- You can clean up food sources like pet food, garbage, or spills
