Perhaps the most horrifying thing you can experience in your home is excessive itching throughout the night. Sure it could be a various amount of things causing you to be itchy, but one of the scariest ones is bed bugs. When you’re a kid bed bugs seem like the made up thing in the nursery rhyme recited to you before bed “goodnight, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite.” When you become an adult you realize they’re a real thing and something you definitely don’t want to deal with!
Bed bugs are most likely unable to be seen with the naked eye, but if you’re itchy they could be prowling within your mattress. In this post, we’ll walk you through how to get rid of an infestation.
Step One: Get Rid of Clutter
A messy room is a favorable environment for bed bugs. If you don’t already have bed bugs and want to avoid them we’d highly suggest making sure you have a clean room. If you do already have them, the first step would be to reduce the clutter that’s in your room. Just be careful, if any of the clutter objects you’re removing has bed bugs on them you could accidentally transfer them to another room. We suggest placing them in a plastic vessel before temporary transporting your items.
Step Two: Wash Your Sheets and Other Infected Linens
This is sort of a no brainer, but you’re obviously going to want to wash any sheets, comforters, pillow cases, ect. that may have come in contact with bed bugs. Once again to prevent the spreading into other rooms in your home, place your linens in a plastic vessel to transport them to your laundry room.
Step Three: Take Apart Your Bed Frame and Furniture
And this is where you’ll start to feel like an exterminator! Dismantling your bed frame will often revel where pesky bed bugs are hiding. Being able to find their hiding spaces is what will allow you to be able to exterminate more effectively. You’ll want to stand your box spring up and shine a flash light through it. If you see any bed bugs or ripped fabric that may indicate a hiding place you’ll want to spray in those places. You may also want to consider a covering for your mattress that will prevent bed bugs from being able to enter the box spring and mattress in the future. If your infestation has gone too far you may need to replace your mattress.
You’ll also want to remove drawers from dressers and inspect any other furniture present in the room for hiding places.
Step Four: Clean, Clean, Clean!
Once you’ve discovered and treated your hiding places you’ll want to deep clean the room to prevent any future bed bug flare ups. Scrubbing infected areas with a very stiff brush will dislodge any present eggs and prevent them from hatching. Vacuuming the space extensively is also very important. You can use a hose attachment to really get into the nooks and crannies of any walls, floorboards, bed frames and furniture to really eradicate those hiding places.
